KidsCan! provides educational and emotional support for the basic needs of children ages 6 to 18, whose parent has been diagnosed with cancer. The program offers a safe, nurturing place for children and their families to help them understand the many aspects of cancer, discuss concerns and develop healthy coping strategies through planned activities each month. Parents are provided with their own forum where they can address parenting concerns and share experiences. KidsCan! meets as two separate groups: one for kids ages 6 - 12, and one for teens ages 13 - 18. To help kids understand cancer and learn how to cope with their feelings, incorporates many fun activities including art, music, games, group discussions and more. We help children express themselves in a fun, caring and supportive environment. The group also tours the Rex Cancer Center to see the equipment and machines used to treat their loved ones. Parents of KidsCan! participants meet as a separate group during this time to share experiences and discuss concerns. The funding for this special program is a collaborative effort between Rex Healthcare and a generous grant given by the Torry Holt Foundation. The Holt Foundation is dedicated to sponsoring educational and support programs for children who have a parent with cancer. |
