From the minutes of the 2004 Annual Board Meeting:
Claudia & Robert Black and Dr. Chuck Scarantino (Rex - Raleigh Hematology) started the meeting with a presentation. The board was shown the sensors that are used in all cancer patients in the current FDA trials. Breast cancer patients are now actively in the trial studies. Sensors are placed in inoperable tumors or in the bed where a lumpectomy has occurred. Another is placed in nearby surrounding tissue to acquire additional readings for comparison. The sensors record, via computer, the amount of radiation that is received at the sensor sites to detail and monitor the correct overall treatment. A new adhesive sensor is being manufactured for skin level radiation monitoring with a hand held radiation reader of the incorporated sensor memory chip. This "One Dose System" is going into production this June. The Sisko grant will be put towards their newest technological breakthrough. A new sensor has been designed which uses the light of a laser. A florescent dye, which bonds to a chemotherapy drug, is infused into a patient and can then be observed to confirm that the medicine is/or not reaching its acquired target area. The potential to aid oncologists with cancer treatment is phenomenal. We are very excited.
