May 26, 2004
The 7:30 AM May 26th Raise a Racquet against Breast Cancer Sisko Foundation Breakfast held at the Marriot Crabtree was fantastic. Over 130 people attended
the event. Master of Ceremonies was our Board Member, Sharon Delaney, Evening anchor woman on NBC-17. Reverend Gregg Alsbrooke led the invocation at 7:50 AM.
Sharon recognized our Board Members, our Coordinating Committee members and our Advisory Board. Our President, Michelle Siler and Susan Barry, Vice-President/Legal Counsel, relayed our foundation history and our past years events. Ursula Nokonoko, Gale Force Media was honored for all of her tireless work and design, on everything from letterhead to our spectacular website.
Karen Happer announced our players for our upcoming Oct. 1st 3rd Raise a Racquet tennis extravaganza. Joining us this year will be, Virginia Wade, John Lloyd, Guillermo Villas and hopefully Ally Baker. We will start off the weekend with Fri. nights Meet the Stars graciously held at the Crabtree Summit. Sat. morning at the Carolina Country Club we will have the childrens and adult clinics followed by a light lunch. Sat. afternoon we will have the rotating Pro/Am matches. That night we will throw our Gala dinner, entitled Paint the Town Pink at the Carolina Country Club. This will include a Silent Auction and a live band, Soul Kitchen.
Sunday will take us to the Raleigh Racquet Club for our exhibition matches. Joining our star players, for a special unprecedented appearance on the courts, we are honored to have Madison of the Madison Morning Show and Chad Sokal, weekend anchor and sports reporter for NBC-17. Everyone should come and see this hilarious matchup of star players and local celebrities!
Our guest speaker was Dr. Charles Scarantino, Oncologist, Triangle Radiation Oncology Services at Rex Cancer Center and founder of Sicel Technologies Inc. He gave us a very informative talk and slide show about the new sensor technology his company is bringing to the medical arena. Sicel is presently in the final stages of FDA approval for their radiation sensor system which accurately monitors radiation levels at a tumor site to help obtain proper dosage over the length of a treatment. They have also designed a disposable skin level monitor. Sisko is involved with Sicels newest technology, a new laser sensor that determines if florescent dyed chemo medications are actually reaching a patients tumor. The potential for this and many other drugs is incredible.
We then proceeded to award our door prizes and pick our raffle ticket winners. We also acknowledged the wonderful contribution of $7000 given to us by Erica Steffen , Hooters America, from their Raleigh Regional beauty pageant. Chuck Gravely of Harris Wholesale was also congratulated for getting us a $2500 donation from Anheuser-Busch.
Sharon Delaney ended our breakfast with an announcement and thanks to all. This September and October, Sisko will be selling pink paper ribbons in over 90 banks, convenient stores and other locations. If you are interested please call Sisko for more information. This breakfast was a wonderful gathering of concerned doctors, lawyers and individuals who really have the heart to want to make a difference. Thank you to ll who attended or contributed and we hope to see you all this October to Paint the Town Pink"!
